Far Far Away by Tom McNeal

Jeremy Johnson Johnson hears the voice of the ghost of Jacob Grimm, one half of The Brothers Grimm. Jacob watches over Jeremy, protecting him from a dark evil in the space between this world and the next. When classmate Ginger takes a bite of bewitched cake, she falls in love with the first person she sees: Jeremy.  The two hatch pranks that lead them to one adventure after another. Things aren't what they seem in the village of Never Better, where kids have gone missing and evil is afoot.

McNeal creates a story of magical realism, in a world between realism and enchantment.  The plot has everything: friendship, mystery, terror and charm, with a solid ending - never sappy or predicable.  This book should have won a Newbury Award.
