Rose is different. She's thrilled that her own name is a homonym, and she purposely gave her dog Rain a name with two homonyms (Reign, Rein) Obsessed with homonyms and rules, she can frustrate her short-tempered father, her teacher and classmates. Rose wonders if she is the reason her mother left when she was two. She has her own type of independence, though, which shows during her relentless search when Rose's father accidentally leaves Rain out during a storm.
This is a wonderful look at Rose's world through her perspective. Ann M. Martin portrays Rose's difficult home life, her isolation from others and the loving bond between her and Rain. This is a quick read, but a emotional and meaningful.
