Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

Woodson describes her book as, "my past, my people, my memories, my story". Written in verse, the story follows the author's childhood from Ohio to South Carolina and then to Brooklyn.  The book is filled with small moments and memories about relatives, food, holidays, happy times and sad times.  Woven through the poems are images of discrimination and the civil rights movement seen through a young person's eyes.

Beautifully written, the words feel authentically child-like.  It's an interesting memoir of a somewhat chaotic family, living in the rapidly changing world of the 1960's.  Winner of the Newbery Honor, Coretta Scott King Honor and the Robert F. Sibert Honor awards.
